Every summer, the heart of Ljubljana transforms into one of Europe’s most extraordinary sporting stages, as elite beach volleyball unfolds on a floating court on the Ljubljanica River. Few sporting events can claim a setting as remarkable as Volleyball on Water. Nestled between the historic façades, picturesque bridges and lively riverbanks of Ljubljana’s old town, this unique tournament turns the tranquil Ljubljanica River into a spectacular arena.
The result is an unforgettable fusion of sport, architecture and urban life that has become one of the city’s defining summer experiences. This year’s edition is slated for 10 and 11 July 2026.

Held annually at Novi trg, the event attracts top beach volleyball players from Slovenia and abroad, who compete under official international rules in front of thousands of spectators lining the riverbanks. Throughout the event, visitors can immerse themselves in an extensive programme that extends well beyond the matches. Live DJs, artistic performances, entertainment on and around the water, interactive fan activities and a lively food and beverage area create a dynamic atmosphere from day into night.

The event also highlights Ljubljana’s green credentials. By temporarily transforming its central river into a world-class sporting venue, Ljubljana demonstrates how sport can activate urban environments, foster community engagement and invite visitors to experience the city from an entirely new perspective.
In a city celebrated for its green spaces, rich cultural heritage and human-scale charm, Volleyball on Water stands as a striking reminder that the most memorable sporting events are often those that dare to challenge convention.
