Maribor City Day 2024, organised by the Municipality of Maribor, won the Best Non-profit Event subcategory at the Unicorn Awards 2025. Designed to give back to the community, the celebration exemplified cultural connection and social responsibility.
The celebration featured a mix of tradition and innovation. Public spaces—from water plants to cultural landmarks—were opened for exploration, while the evening brought the Silent Disco, a unique party experience with wireless headphones that energised youth and young-at-heart participants without disturbing the city. The “Five Hills, Five Concerts” hike offered music across five elevated locations, combining nature, urban views, and diverse genres to engage all ages. Bus tours and open-door initiatives further highlighted Maribor’s cultural and civic heritage.
Delivering the event required extensive planning and coordination. Over 30 stakeholders, including public enterprises, cultural institutions, and volunteers, worked together under the Mayor’s Office, ensuring smooth logistics for multiple venues, outdoor concerts, and innovative programs like the Silent Disco and guided tours. Preparations began five months in advance to address unpredictable weather, infrastructure challenges, and inclusive community participation.
With a modest €30,000 budget, Maribor City Day achieved outstanding results: over 10,000 attendees, 40+ unpaid media mentions, extensive social media engagement, and a remarkable return on investment. Sustainability was embedded throughout, from promoting public transport and shared bicycles to encouraging the reuse of headlamps for night hikes. By bridging tradition, creativity, and civic engagement, Maribor City Day 2024 set a new standard for inclusive, sustainable, and inspiring city celebrations.
